Our “Just Scan It 3D” project was launched in summer 2024. Here, we are investigating how we can use AI and expertise in uncertainty quantification and anomaly detection to capture authentic 3D scenes and models. And without the need for time-consuming and complex 3D modelling. The initial results are promising: we realised the Doppelbock, the largest exhibit of our partner Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, on the basis of 300 drone images using 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). Reconstructed with Postshot, processed with Supersplat and integrated into our VR environment developed in Unity, we were able to explore what would otherwise only be possible with a lot of stair climbing.
Special thanks go to our project partners ControlExpert GmbH, schnaq GmbH and above all the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum for the drone footage they provided.
The project is still young, but we are proud of the collaboration and the innovative approaches we are pursuing together.
